"He sent out His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave."
Psalm 107:20
One of the greatest lessons God taught me in the mission field came through a woman named Ate Linda.

When we first met her, she was going through one of the most difficult seasons of her life.
Her body was covered with psoriasis. Her skin was wounded and painful, her hair had fallen out, and her body was swollen from the effects of her illness. Almost every day, she battled fever and severe headaches. Yet beyond her physical suffering was an even deeper struggle—she had lost hope. Ate Linda believed that her life would soon come to an end, and she carried the weight of that fear and discouragement every day.

As missionaries, we could not immediately change her condition. We had no medicine that could instantly heal her or remove her pain. What we could offer was our presence. We listened to her story, prayed with her, encouraged her, and showed simple acts of care. During our visits, we gently massaged her and reminded her that God had not forgotten her, even in the midst of her suffering.
Three months later, we returned to visit her. The change was remarkable. Her hair had grown back, her skin had healed, and her overall health had improved significantly. Seeing her smile where there had once been despair was something I will never forget. She shared that from the time we prayed with her and cared for her, she began to experience gradual improvement. More importantly, she said that what touched her most was not the physical help we provided—it was the hope we gave her when she felt she had none left.

That experience changed my perspective on ministry. I learned that people do not always need solutions first; sometimes they need someone who will simply walk beside them. They need someone who will listen, pray, and remind them that their life still matters.
God's healing is not limited to the body. Often, He begins by restoring the heart.
Through Ate Linda's story, I was reminded that compassion can become a powerful channel of God's grace. When we choose empathy over judgment and presence over criticism, we create space for God to work in ways we may never fully understand.
Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give someone is hope—and sometimes, hope is where healing begins.
