Walking by Faith: When God Led Us to a House in Need

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)

While doing house-to-house visitation, we had no idea where to go. The people around us seemed to be avoiding us, so we prayed and asked the Lord to prepare the house He wanted us to visit. We had brought a few groceries and rice for a mother we often saw walking in front of the house where we were staying. She is a PWD, but that day our attention was drawn to an older woman carrying a heavy sack of palay. Nanay was hunched over from the weight, so I approached her and said, Nanay, let us help you carry that. She seemed not to hear me, so we followed her home. What we saw broke our hearts.

Nanay’s husband was very thin and could no longer work. When we asked how they were doing, Nanay told us, “We have nothing to eat every day. Our children left us, and there is no support coming from them. So now I struggle to gather leftover rice from the fields so that will be our food in the coming days.” My partner and I looked at each other and immediately said, “Nanay, please wait for a bit. We just need to go home for a moment.”

We hurried home and brought more groceries, bread, and rice for Nanay and her husband. It was only a small act of kindness, but the joy on their faces was something I will never forget. Their gratitude reminded me that sometimes, what feels small to us can mean everything to someone who is struggling.

Before we left, I saw Nanay praying. I could not understand her Bisaya words, but somehow, I knew in my heart that God had heard her prayer—and that He had allowed us to be there at exactly the right moment. She embraced us tightly, tears filling her eyes while a beautiful smile remained on her face. She even asked for our names. In that moment, I realized that a simple act of kindness can restore hope, open hearts, and build genuine relationships rooted in love. From that day on, we continued visiting Nanay and Tatay and sharing whatever food we had with them. More than providing food, we wanted them to know that they were seen, loved, and cared for.

We did not go there expecting anything in return. We simply wanted to help—and somehow, God used that small act to remind me of the real heart of this mission. The Lord was teaching me not to be distracted by everything I see. Instead, I must keep praying wholeheartedly, continue serving, and trust Him with everything beyond my control. Walk by faith, not by sight. Sometimes, God allows us to see difficult things not to discourage us, but to show us where His love is needed most.
