Baking with Purpose: Serving Through Simple Joys

Cooking has always been close to my heart. There’s something deeply fulfilling about preparing food for others—it’s simple, but it speaks love in a way words sometimes cannot. During my years serving as a missionary in Korea, I was often assigned to cook during gatherings. While I enjoyed it, baking was something I didn’t do as often. It requires precision, patience, and the right tools—things not always easy to manage in a mission setting.

But everything changed during the pandemic.

When classes were suspended and shifted online, I suddenly had more time on my hands. That’s when I decided to try baking again. What started as a way to pass time slowly turned into something more meaningful. As classes gradually returned to normal and students came back to the dormitory, I continued baking and began sharing what I made with them. Seeing their smiles as they tasted the pastries brought me so much joy—it reminded me that even small acts can brighten someone’s day.

One day, one of our female students was about to celebrate her birthday. I felt impressed to bake her a cake. When I surprised her, her reaction was unforgettable—she was genuinely happy and touched. That single moment sparked something special. From then on, it became a tradition in the girls’ dormitory. I would bake a cake for each student on her birthday.

Soon enough, the boys heard about it—and yes, they felt a little left out. They started asking if I could bake cakes for them too. That’s how the tradition grew. I began making birthday cakes not only for all the students but also for the teachers. With every cake, my motivation grew stronger. Their excitement, their smiles, and even the anticipation whenever someone’s birthday approached—it all made the effort worth it.

It didn’t stop there. I also started baking cakes for students who were baptized, celebrating not just their birthdays but their new life in Christ. These moments became more than just celebrations—they became reminders of God’s grace at work in their lives.

Photos of these celebrations were often shared on our school’s online platform, and reading messages from parents was incredibly heartwarming. Many expressed their gratitude, thanking me for making their children feel loved even while they were away from home.

Of course, not every student remembered to say “thank you,” but that never discouraged me. I believe that God gave me this talent for a reason, and I’m simply grateful that I can use it to bring joy to others.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” —1 Peter 4:10

My prayer is that these students will one day be inspired to share their own blessings and become a blessing to others as well.
