Divine Timing: How God Bypassed My Biggest Limitation

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end".

Ecclesiastes 3:11

To be completely honest, I arrived in the Philippines with a pretty naive assumption: I thought everyone would speak fluent English. Reality hit me fast. Most locals spoke Tagalog, and suddenly, the deep, heart-to-heart missionary conversations I had envisioned felt completely out of reach. Standing on the mission field, a heavy wave of helplessness washed over me. I had always hoped that as a missionary, I’d get to guide someone through the Bible. But with every language barrier I hit, that dream felt like it was slipping away. I started to quietly wonder if my presence here even mattered.

But then came the ultimate plot twist.

One afternoon, during our routine home visits, we ventured deep into the mountains—so far up the winding paths that I genuinely wondered how anyone lived out there. Tucked away in the hills was a small, quiet home belonging to an elderly woman and her son. When we started chatting, I was absolutely stunned: both of them spoke English beautifully. They welcomed us with open arms, pleasantly surprised to see foreigners navigating such a remote area.

We kept coming back. We didn’t rush into a sermon; instead, we just focused on building a genuine, caring relationship. We brought food, shared medicine, and sat down to eat meals together. Little by little, a beautiful connection began to grow.

Then, the moment that I had been eagerly waiting for happened.

During one of our visits, the elderly woman opened her heart to us. She shared that she had been a devout Catholic since birth, but for years, she had been quietly searching for deeper answers. She had been studying the Bible on her own, noticing contradictions between traditional teachings and scripture, but she was stuck. There was so much she couldn't fully understand. With incredible vulnerability, she looked at us and asked if we could study the Bible together.

I literally got goosebumps. In a remote mountain village, this woman had been praying for truth. Meanwhile, God led me—someone harboring a quiet, desperate desire to share the Word—straight to her doorstep. At a moment when I felt completely useless because of my language limitations, God bypassed the barrier entirely to bring two longing souls together.

Our weekly studies are the absolute highlight of my mission. Watching her faith unfold is beautiful. Every time we open the Bible together, I can see the pieces starting to resonate for her, and it fills me with so much hope. I find myself constantly praying for the moment she decides to take that next big step—to fully surrender her heart and accept Jesus as her personal Savior. I know God is already doing a quiet, beautiful work in her soul, and I can't wait to see how He completes it.

Stop waiting until you feel "perfectly equipped" to finally show up. If I had let my fear of the language barrier keep me in my comfort zone, I would have missed a literal miracle waiting in the mountains. Your perceived limitations are never a barrier to a God who specializes in the impossible. You might feel like an empty vessel, but you belong to a God who is always overflowing.
