Serving with Faith in Kaohsiung: A Mission Journey

My name is Bomi Song, a missionary from the 65th batch of the 1000 Missionary Movement. I am currently serving in Kaohsiung; a city located in southern Taiwan. I was assigned to this mission field in September 2025, and today I serve at the Sanmin Seventh-day Adventist Church together with a Korean pastor and his wife, as well as another missionary from PCM.

Taiwan has a rich and deeply rooted religious culture. Many people practice Buddhism or Taoism, and it is common to see large statues inside homes where families offer worship every morning. Because of this cultural background, inviting people to church can be quite challenging—even when the church offers free programs or services. Most Taiwanese families live comfortably, and many feel they do not need additional help, so they do not easily respond to invitations.

When I first arrived at the church, my pastor asked me to teach English classes for children and lead children’s worship every Sabbath. However, there was one problem—there were no children attending our church at that time. Because of this, my first mission was clear: invite children from the community to come.

This was not an easy task. We began distributing flyers and personally inviting families. We visited elementary schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, and nearby streets, trying to connect with parents and children. Every day during this process, I prayed earnestly for God’s guidance and blessing. I had a strong passion to share the gospel, but I also realized something important along the way: mission work cannot be accomplished by human effort alone. It is only possible through Jesus Christ.

Learning to surrender everything to Him changed my perspective. Instead of relying on my own strength, I trusted God to open the doors in His perfect time.

And truly, He did.

By God’s grace, several children eventually came to our church—one elementary student and four kindergarteners. With these children, I started English classes that included cooking activities, art projects, and other fun learning experiences. These activities helped create a joyful environment where children could learn while also building relationships with us.

At first, the parents were understandably cautious. They did not immediately trust us. But as time passed, they began to see our sincerity and genuine care for their children. Slowly, their hearts opened, and they felt comfortable allowing their children to participate in the church programs.

In January of this year, we were finally able to begin children’s worship services. Around the same time, one young boy also started attending church regularly.

Mission work is not always easy, but my heart is filled with peace and joy. Each day, as I read the Bible and spend time in prayer, I am reminded that God is always with me. That assurance gives me the strength to keep moving forward.

My prayer is that our children’s ministry will continue to grow and that one day our children’s worship will be filled with many young hearts eager to learn about Jesus.

The journey may not always be simple, but one thing remains true: through Jesus Christ, all things are possible.
